Lexus makes the hybrid CT 200h, and rumors suggest a more powerful CT 300h might also come onto the scene. Toyota’s luxury division also makes big hybrid SUV, like the RX 450h, but what do you get when you combine the two? Lexus refers their upcoming model as Lexus CX 300h hybrid compact crossover.
According to our German contributor, you get the Lexus CX 300h which is a compact crossover with a hybrid powertrain. The upcoming model is reportedly based on the RAV4 CUV platform and will serve as contender for the BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Mercedes Benz GLK.
Under the bonnet of the Lexus CX 300h compact crossover will be another four-cylinder hybrid with around 200 hp and capable of under 5L/100km, or 47 MPG. Given the fact that the CT 200h doesn’t make anywhere near this level of power, Lexus will probably dream up something new. Given the fact that it will be sold globally, we’re hoping they don’t cannibalize the new 2.5-liter for the 2012 Camry. It might also be a good idea to offer a diesel version for once.
Sounds like a really good idea to us, so Lexus should definitely hurry with bringing the Lexus CX 300h hybrid compact crossover to market. Should they get the design right, this could be a very important model, and the CX 300h has the potential to bring a lot of sales to the Japanese luxury brand.
However, Lexus has always been late to the game, and we think they should have had the Lexus CX 300h hybrid compact crossover at least a couple of years back. With all most of the German carmakers already well established, it will be really difficult to make a significant dent with a new product such as Lexus CX 300h compact crossover.
