At the 2011 Geneva Auto Show, Toshio Masuda, Product Manager for Subaru’s new boxer-engine sports coupe, the one that shares architechture with the 2012 Toyota FT-86 sports coupe, did not reveal of the car’s chassis than you would expect. But one thing that caught the eyes of the viewers at the auto show is the car’s benchmark which targets its competitor – the Porsche Cayman.
Do not be surprise, the Subaru Boxer Sport Car will nothing like any Porsches and hold your breath because it might be the same price with the Subaru Impreza WR, but here is the interesting part – it will have Cayman-like balance.
Subaru’s exhibition is a true show-stopper, both in visual and tech aspects, also the new concepts is built around the Horizontally-Opposed Boxer Engine. Subaru confirmed that the Boxer Sports Car will be sold as sports coupe and for the United States it will have 2+2 design seating. The engine is 2.0-liter boxer four cylinder and able to produce around 200 horsepower.
Subaru stated that the heart of the Technology Exhibit is the Subaru Boxer engine because it is lightweight, compact and low center of gravity that lends itself to the level of driving excitement that Subaru is aiming for and without a doubt, is the most suitable engine for the RWD Sports Car.
The Subaru Boxer engine is constructed of aluminum for its compact and rigid engine design, making for a much lighter power unit. The piston is opposing movements inherently counteract each other, so no balance shaft is needed. This cancels out excess vibrations and gives the engine a sprightly, sporty feel at virtually any engine speed.
The Boxer engine unit is even further lowered and set back further towards the centre of the chassis. This feature also offer a low-profile sports coupe silhouette with its lowered engine hood design, thus resulting in a lowered driving position. These elements combined provided for better drivability, stability and handling. Check our photo if you confuse with our explanation and you will see why we refer it as “Car-chitecture”.
